Hockey players generate a lot of bodily fluids when they are playing.  

These fluids are absorbed into the gear, penetrating into the cracks and crevices, the nooks and crannies of the various articles.  Many times the athlete may not be fully aware of the health hazard that now begins to build, buried deep into his or her equipment.

When this gear is put away damp in a bag, it becomes an ideal breeding ground for bacteria.  Sweat starts out as odorless, but the bacteria consuming that sweat then eliminate their own waste products which break down chemical bonds, and soon enough your gear begins to sprout mold, mildew and fungi.  Now, we have equipment deterioration and the full blown awful odor.
